WHY USE AN ELECTRONIC DATABASE?

Adapted from an article found at: http://www.visityourlibrary.net/articles_online.html

¨      Some of the best information out there can’t be found anywhere on the Internet, no matter which search engine you choose, but can be located through the databases that the Kanawha Public Library subscribes to.  In a database, magazines, newspapers and journals, including back issues and current issues, are stored online for easy retrieval.

¨      Databases allow you to simultaneously search through hundreds of periodicals from CREDIBLE publishing companies.

¨      Database search results ALWAYS show you who wrote the article, who published it and when it was published.  This is not always true when you just surf the ‘Net.

¨      You can depend on the fact that Databases are updated regularly.  This may not be true of Internet Web Sites.

¨      Databases are user-friendly.  You simply enter a search term on a topic of interest to you.  The results will include current articles AS WELL AS articles from back issues from a diverse range of publications.  In many cases, you can read the complete article immediately online.

¨      If you wish to keep the article for later use, you can e-mail it to yourself or print it.

¨      If you wish to read only complete articles during your research, you can specify that function in the search form by selecting the “Search Full-Text” only option.

¨      Databases house hundreds of magazines, journals and newspapers ranging in topics from science and computing to history, archaeology, art, music, health, politics, and much more.

¨      You can access the databases for FREE from the CCHS Computer Lab, the CCHS Library, a classroom, or from home.

¨       A search conducted from inside the database STAYS INSIDE the database.  It will not produce links to other sites on the Internet that may be undesirable.
